DMN Software-Entwicklung GmbH demonstrates advanced IEEE 1394a/b and HAVi demo network on Cu/POF medium at CEBIT show in Hanover, Germany

Vienna/Austria, February 27, 2004 — dmn Software-Entwicklung GmbH (DMN), Europe’s leading HAVi 1.1 provider and 1394 Trade Association member, will present an advanced 1394/HAVi network with several 1394 end devices combined with an intelligent cabling system for residential environment developed by Reichle & De-Massari AG (R&M) to an international audience at CeBIT show (Hanover, Germany, 18.-24.3.2004, hall 14, booth H13) .

The demonstration will include 1394a and 1394b devices and will support transparent networking across Cu and POF media cables. The entire network will consist of two 1394 audio/video streaming hard discs acting simultaneously as MPEG2-TS sources and sinks, one DVB MPEG2-TS tuner as well as two embedded consumer electronic PCs capable of decoding MPEG2 audio/video presented on two display units. An intelligent user interface will allow to establish audio/video transmission among connected devices with optional timeshift behaviour.

The used media converter for Cu and POF cables are IDB-1394 compliant and are provided by DMN’s network partners Mindready Solutions and FireComms and are available as an internal PCI card or external CCP (customer convenience port) adapter.

The software architecture behind the demonstrated scenario is based on DMN’s HAVi 1.1 software, suitable for embedded and PC environment through DMN’s HAVi 1.1 software development kit. The HAVi network is able to take control of attached AV/C devices such as the used MPEG2 tuner. DMN’s platform independent HAVi solution is currently available on QNX, Linux, Windows and RTEMS platforms and can also be ported to MOST bus system for automotive applications.

“DMN is proud to present for the very first time worldwide a combined 1394a/b HAVi and AV/C based network scenario in combination with both, Cu and POF physical media cables. This advanced setup combines the IDB-1394 POF CCP used in automotive environment with a F07 POF connector used in R&M’s RJ45 (RCC45®) residential cabling system. This HAVi demonstrator proves that seamless 1394 networking is reality between residential and automotive environments independent of used physical media”, said Peter Skiczuk, cofounder and managing director of DMN.

IDB-1394 establishes the fundamental architecture, plastic optical fiber and copper connector specifications for a FireWire® multimedia backbone. It enables consumers to connect 1394- equipped portable consumer electronics products, such as CD players, DVDs, games or computers, to their vehicles.
